Things to see and do in Brittany

There are loads of things to see and do in central brittany, and we are only an hour from the north and south coasts. This page is to give you some ideas, but it only gives a taste of what is available.

Tour de France 2008

The Tour starts in Brittany this year and we are perfectly situated to see all three opening stages. The first two stages pass by only a few minutes away from us - see the map below. This week is still available - book soon!

The Gorge of Toul Goulic at Trémargat

About 15 minutes from the gite, Toul Goulic is an extraordinary area of massive rounded granite boulders extending for about 300 metres under which the Blavet runs. The river has brought the boulders down by erosion of the soil, and they have piled up on each other. The boulders have been smoothed by weathering. This is a fascinating place for a walk.

Lake Guerlédan

About 25 minutes from the gîte. Here you will find boating, swimming , watersports, pedalos, walks, cycling, mountain biking, fishing, climbing, cruises, andthe forest of Quénécan to explore. Bikes, boats canoës etc can all be hired.

The Abbaye de Bon Repos and Les Forges des Salles are there to visit.

The Nantes to Brest Canal

The canal at Glomel is 10 minutes from Pempoulrot. The canal runs across Brittany. Great walking and cycling. It is possible to cycle the whole way. At Glomel you can hire kayaks and rafts and go down the toboggan slides

La Tranchée des bagnards at Glomel

This is the high point of the Nantes-Brest canal and the watershed between the Blavet and the Aulne. The trench was cut during the 19th century and took the forced labour of 700 condemned men, nine years from 1823 to 1832 to complete. The trench is 3 kilometres long, up to 23 metres deep and 100 metres wide. The volume of soil removed was greater than the pyramid of Cheops.

Les gorges du Corong at Locarn

According to legend, the Chaos at Corong was formed when Boudédé, the first man to live in Brittany, was walking along the edge of the forest of Duault. Stones got in his clogs and he threw these in the river, thus forming the area of massive granite boulders at Corong. Geologists have a more mundane explanation. More good walking in beautiful woodland.

The Old Railway Line

Through the centre of Brittany from Carhaix to Rostrenen and beyond, you can walk, run or bike the former railway line. Beautifully maintained, the line lets you see the countryside while keeping off the roads.

General

There is great walking and cycling throughout Central Brittany and we can make maps available to help you find the routes. There is also a stable/riding centre about 10 minutes from the gite if you fancy a hack.

There are lots of marked walks with a theme available: Glomel, Locarn, Peumerit Quintin, lac de Kerné Uhel, Bois de Beaucours à Saint Nicolas du Pélem, Bois de Mezle between Locarn and Maël Carhaix, the Bois de Kerbescont at Rostrenen.

And if you want to go further afield, there is the magnificent coastline of northern Brittany, the Côte de Granit Rose, the wild seashore of Finistère, the beaches of Morbihan. We are central to them all.
